You slowly shut the door. Assaulting two men will needlessly put Emily in danger. Anyway, you have no weapons and at least one of them has a weapon.
You decide to wait the flight out. Maybe you can negotiate
with whoever meets you on the other side. You settle in for the long haul,
finding a fairly comfortable spot on top of one of the cargo crates. The
exhaustion of the day catches up to you and you drift asleep.
A sudden jolt wakes you up from a troubled dream. Another
smaller jolt and the screech of the front tires hitting a runway confirms that
you are landing. You quickly jump down the cargo crate and run towards the
front of the cargo section and the only pair of windows.
Outside, bright sunlight beats down on a small desert
airport, the air shimmering in the heat. A massive mountain range dominates the
skyline, the side pocked with small villages. You can just about make out the
white snow-covered peaks. You can’t think of a more effective natural prison.
The plane taxis for a few minutes
towards a small terminal. A fuel truck waits next to a set of stairs. Both look
ancient and barely functional. A large man in a dirty white vest is sleeping in
the shade of the fuel truck, his cap drawn over his face. Two bored looking men
are standing underneath the air stares.
As soon as the plane comes to a stop, the pull the air
stares towards the plane. The man underneath the truck stirs and takes his time
getting up and getting on with refueling the plane. The plane door opens and
the two men disembark, two pilots following close behind. A black SUV emerges
from the terminal and picks up the men. You are alone.
You open the door to the front section and find Emily
looking towards you, sitting up in her chair.
“Hurry!” she says urgently. “They may be back any second!”
You rush towards her. “Hello to you too,” you say with a
smile on your face. She gives you a very unimpressed look. She points to her
ankles. You find she has been cuffed to the chair.
You look around and find a fire extinguisher. You grab it
and run back to Emily’s char. After a few mighty swings, the cuff around the
chair shatters, freeing Emily.
Emily gives you a big hug. “I knew you would come and rescue
me!” she exclaims and smiles brightly at you. “But what do we do now?”
You stand at the door looking out, the stairs are still
there, but the workers and the fuel truck has cleared out. There is no sign of
the SUV at the terminal. A small village is a couple of miles away, at the end
of the runway.
