“Let’s get help from the police,” you say to Emily and you start down the pot-holed road.
“If you think so,” Emily replies with a hint of doubt in her
voice.
The police station is situated in the only white plastered
building in the village. A flag hangs limply from a flagpole above the SUV.
You enter the building, the door creaking on its hinges,
into a dimly lit room. A fan is slowly turning above your heads, losing the
battle against the sweltering heat. Two men in uniform stand behind a counter.
One leaning lazily against a wall while the other is standing with his back
against the counter. As you get nearer, you can see a small television set
showing the grainy images of a football match. Both men are staring at the
screen.
“Excuse me!” you say, feeling that you should apologise for
distracting them from their game.
The man leaning against the counter looks at you, annoyed.
With a hand he tugs at his colleague’s shirt sleeve. The man turns towards you.
He takes a long look at both you and Emily. “Yes. What you want!” he commands
in a thick accent.
The other policeman slowly removes himself from the counter
and walks towards an empty desk. He sits down and without taking his eyes off
you, slowly picks up the phone and dials.
“We need help, she has been kidnapped,” you say, pointing to
Emily.
“Sounds serious. Why don’t you come to the back and I will
take your statement,” he gestures to the only other desk in the station. The
other policeman is still on the phone, his eyes still fixed on you and Emily.
You follow him to his desk. He points to two empty seats and
you sit down.
“OK, I need to get the forms. Wait here.” He disappears
behind a door in the back of the room. The man on the phone hangs up and sits
back in his chair.
“I’m getting a bad feeling,” Emily whispers in your ear. You
have been sitting for fifteen minutes waiting for the policeman to return with
the forms.
“Yeah, me too. Let’s just leave,” You say and get up.
“You can’t go. We need your statement,” The cop sitting
behind the desk says.
“It’s OK. We changes our minds,” Says Emily.
“Not OK. You leave and I arrest you. You must stay, wait,”
Behind you the door opens. The police officer you have been
waiting for enters the room. Behind him are the two men from the aircraft.
You are taken back to the aircraft, handcuffed and
blindfolded. You and Emily are flown to the agents’ country and are “guests’ of
the foreign government for a long time.
The professor attempts to restart his research. However, his
technology is forever in the hands of a hostile foreign power.
The end.
